Furniture & Item Donation
Landfill is always our last resort. Wherever a house, office or garden clearance turns up furniture, appliances or belongings that still have life left in them, our furniture and item donation service makes sure they go somewhere useful instead — to local charities, reuse schemes and recycling partners across York and North Yorkshire.
What we donate and recycle
Usable furniture, working electricals, books, clothing, toys, kitchenware and bric-a-brac are all candidates for donation rather than disposal. We work with local charity shops and reuse organisations who can put these items straight back into circulation, and with specialist recyclers for materials like metal, wood and electricals that can’t be reused as-is but shouldn’t go to landfill either.
How we decide what gets donated
During any clearance, our team sorts items as they come out of the property rather than after the fact, separating what’s genuinely reusable from what’s beyond saving. Furniture is checked for safety and condition, electricals are tested where practical, and anything with an obvious second life — a good sofa, a working washing machine, a box of children’s books — goes into the donation pile rather than the waste pile.
Supporting local charities
By donating locally rather than defaulting to disposal, clearances also support charities operating in York and the surrounding area, who rely on donated goods for both resale income and to help people in need directly. It’s one of the reasons a large proportion of what we clear — typically around 85% — is diverted away from landfill.
Can I choose where things go?
If you have a particular charity or cause you’d like items donated to, let us know before the clearance and we’ll do our best to route suitable items there. Otherwise we use our regular network of local partners, chosen because they can genuinely put donations to good use.
Donation as part of any clearance
This isn’t a separate job you need to book — donation and recycling are built into every house, probate, office and hoarder clearance we carry out. If you’d specifically like a single item or a small collection collected for donation without a full clearance, let us know and we can arrange that too.
Items that need special handling
Not everything can be donated straightforwardly. Mattresses, for instance, can usually only be donated if they meet current fire safety labelling requirements, and are otherwise recycled through specialist mattress recycling rather than sent to general waste. Fridges, freezers and other appliances containing refrigerant gases must be processed through licensed recyclers rather than charity shops. Upholstered furniture without a visible fire safety label can’t legally be resold second-hand, even if it’s otherwise in good condition. We know these rules well and sort accordingly, so nothing is donated that couldn’t legally be resold, and nothing recyclable is thrown away simply because it looked complicated to deal with.
Collections for smaller jobs
If you just have a wardrobe, a sofa, or a handful of boxes to pass on rather than a whole property to clear, a standalone donation collection is usually more cost-effective than booking a full clearance. We'll ask a few quick questions about size and access when you enquire, agree a fixed price, and collect at a time that suits you — with the same commitment to donating or recycling rather than dumping.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need to book a full clearance to donate items?
No — if you just have a specific item or a small collection to donate, we can often arrange a standalone collection.
What happens to items that can’t be donated?
Anything that can’t be reused is recycled where possible, with genuine waste disposed of responsibly and in line with our waste carrier’s licence.
Can I choose which charity receives donated items?
Yes, tell us your preference before the clearance and we’ll route suitable items there where we can.
Do you test electrical items before donating them?
Where practical, yes — working electricals are far more useful to a charity or new owner than untested ones.
